Élise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky

FROM 07.03.2014 TILL 25.04.2014
WITH: Élise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky

In a nutshell…

A wandering field study, attentive to manifestations of the irrational, the survival of fabulations, and mechanisms of resistance, the poetics of Elise Florenty and Marcel Türkowsky explore the different layers of the multiplicity of being through various metamorphoses and expressions. For example, they consider delirium as a territory of dissent, a space of somnambulistic activity or lucid trance, where time manifests itself in a paradoxical way, between immobility and explosion, in a kind of suspension that foreshadows the urgency of awakening…

Operating through successive disconnections between seeing and saying, the artists combine their respective knowledge of film theory and music ethnology to construct a body of work that takes on all kinds of audiovisual forms: structural, narrative, or hypnotic.

The field of investigation for this artistic duo lies in a spiral of metamorphoses that question our ever-changing relationship with power over the Other (the enemy, the animal, the spirit, the dead, etc.). For the exhibition, they propose a method that consists of filtering the various rumors of the world, and the way in which they are recorded and transmitted—the chronicles—by classifying them into the various chapters that punctuate Lewis Carroll’s short story « A Nymph’s Lament» (1876).

A cruel, absurd, and enthusiastic endeavor, dissecting the irrational and magical elements hidden behind all human constructions and machinations.

On the occasion of the exhibition at the Centre d’art contemporain / Passages in Troyes, Élise Florenty and Marcel Türkowsky approached local textile, dyeing, and clothing manufacturers to create a short, rhythmic, experimental film that shows how materials are formed, colored, and shaped by a ballet of machines of varying degrees of modernity: mechanical, electric, computerized… Ancient techniques, on the verge of disappearing, are intertwined with the history of early local industrialization, which now tends to resist the global order.
