Born in 1950, Nadine Monnin is a visual artist trained at the École Supérieure des Arts Modernes (ESAM) in Paris. Based in Vendeuvre-sur-Barse, near Troyes, she has been working with painting, drawing, and photography since the 1980s. Continuously exploring both ancient and contemporary techniques, she draws inspiration from her immediate surroundings. Like Francis Ponge and his attention to the everyday, she elevates elements often deemed insignificant. A silent observer, she creates works that seek to establish a connection with reality.
For the past twenty years, Nadine Monnin has been printing her images using the gum bichromate process, a technique involving a photosensitive emulsion. The original photograph becomes just one step in a complex process where negatives are transformed. In the prints presented here, multiple layers are applied, combining a 19th-century technique with digital methods. The outcome, always unpredictable, consists of potassium bichromate and powdered pigment.
Her original images are thus continuously reworked through multiple stages, ultimately merging the visual elements of this non-silver, highly low-tech process. This collection of fifteen framed works, reminiscent of experimental cinema, reveals a sensitivity to water, light, and vegetation. It also reflects the artist’s inclination for the quiet contemplation of what unfolds before us.
Nadine Monnin’s photographs capture fleeting moments with a Camusian neutrality—peaceful, suspended in a visual interstice open to multiple interpretations.
In today’s fast-moving and turbulent world, her work recreates landscapes where calm—and perhaps a hint of hope—prevail, emerging from the artist’s humble and unfiltered perspective.
