Mascarade et ruralité
Damien Rouxel
24.02.2025 — 14.03.2025
At the start of 2025, he will be working at Collège Paul Portier and Lycée Professionnel du Val Moré in Bar-sur-Seine. Damien's PAG project revolves around masquerade, carnival, metamorphosis and play, using props, masks, costumes, headdresses, etc. to create and stage figures who question the identity of the region, the stories of its inhabitants and rurality. These figures will then parade around and take center stage for photographic portraits.

Théo Robine-Langlois' practice explores language through a variety of media, including screen, book, radio, internet, reading and exhibition. His writing has been drifting since the '91s. His texts play with genres, registers and dysfunctions, in an attempt to loosen the grip of various fictions experienced in everyday life, aided in this quest by literal collisions between images and words, and by a love of objects, plants and clouds.

Charly Bechaimont
15.07.2024 — 15.08.2024
Charly Bechaimont's practice, which is mainly autobiographical, takes as its starting point his membership of the travelling community, but also his homosexuality and the conditions under which these two identities cohabit or, on the contrary, repel each other. During her residency at Passages, the artist deepened the notion of testimony already present in her practice. More generally, the condition of the minority within a minority drives her research throughout the residency.

Pepo Salazar Lacruz
27.01.2024 — 30.03.2024
Pepo Salazar Lacruz is a Basque artist living and working in Paris since 2013. His work has been widely disseminated over the past two decades, notably at MOMENTUM 10 Biennale, Centre Georges Pompidou, MACBA Museum, Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Ricard, CA2M Museum, and La Casa Encendida. In 2015, he represented Spain alongside Francesc Ruiz and Cabello/Carceller, curated by Marti Manem, at the 56th Venice Biennale. His artistic practice encompasses a variety of mediums, from sculptural assemblage to artist films, novel and sound piece writing, performance, collage, and album composition. At Passages, the artist presents fourteen recent productions, assemblages derived from imposed protocols, created primarily for the art center's space. Close to the Fluxus movement and the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, he is attuned to theories of linguistics, philosophy, economics, and ecology. Pepo Salazar Lacruz appropriates symbolic objects of the excesses of consumer society in a form of critical abstraction, oscillating between the absurdity of capitalism pushed to its extreme and an intrinsic humor in his works. The exhibition thus reveals a polysemy of joyful and paradoxical forms.

Melanie Matranga was born in 1985 in Marseille. She graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in 2011. In 2014, she was awarded the Frieze Artist Award and was nominated for the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard prize in the same year, as well as the Aware prize in 2018. She is represented by the galleries High Art (Paris, Arles, FR) and Karma International (Zurich, CH). Her work, which combines installations, sculptures, and films, has been the subject of several solo shows, notably at the Palais de Tokyo (2015), Villa Vassiliev (2018), and in her French and Swiss galleries. She uses language as a witness, approaching it through appropriations (personal narratives, pieces of music...) or direct messages integrated into her works. Her relationship to space, altered through a sensitive apprehension of its architecture or luminous perception, disturbs the visit and enhances the dreamlike sensation of the exhibition Éveillée.

Exhibition from Friday, February 9 to Friday, March 30, 2018 This solo exhibition marks a new stage in Sascha Nordmeyer's practice, which primarily questions the notion of space. The venue's post-industrial architecture is invested with large-scale kinetic ensembles, composed of airy, translucent paper screens. Fracture lines between vibrant gradations of light become a compositional tool for shaping forms, creating rhythm and generating multiple perspectives. The artist proposes a journey based on movement, sensitive and experimental, which moves in the eye of the spectator as he moves. Aliénor Welschbillig / Félix Bressieux
Aliénor Welschbillig & Félix Bressieux
06.10.2017 — 08.12.2017
What interests Aliénor Wlschbillig is the unexpected emergence, exit or expulsion of a material that rushed out of a place from which it was not visible. Above all, she likes to share the birth of a form that modifies space and enters into full resonance with it... Indeed, it is in the sensitive interaction of fullness and tenuous emptiness, where opposites coexist, touch and penetrate, that Aliénor finds the principal material for her creation. Aliénor creates sculptures whose concentrated forms, multiplied and repeated lines create a vibratory movement. She offers a condensed energy of matter that unfolds in the volume occupied. The artist seeks to detect in materials a primordial vitality, a pulsation. There's a real desire to experience matter, to exhaust it in order to confront it and reduce it to pure expression. The obsessive character visible in the work finds a breaking point in the incisive intervention it provokes, breaking away from confinement. On the initiative of Trojan gallery Phantom Projects Contemporary, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Troyes and the Centre d'Art Contemporain Passages are respectively hosting the two emerging artists with a series of vernissages. At CAC Passages, Aliénor Welschbillig and Félix Bressieux will be showing, respectively, sculptures based on the observation of nature, transcribed through transformed raw materials, and soft performative paintings generated mainly by rudimentary machines. In effect, each remains in its own place, but offers a constant exchange throughout the three exhibition rooms.

Félix Bressieux / Aliénor Welschbillig
Félix Bressieux & Aliénor Welschbillig
06.10.2017 — 08.12.2017
"... Painting is performance, ritual, living...". Félix Bressieux's paintings are based on a simple, uncluttered language. It's a protocol-driven process in which the artist remains in the background, letting the dance of a protagonist gesture create and recreate itself. He uses schemas, mathematical and logical systems, sometimes borrowed, sometimes improvised. These schemes and systems organize shapes and colors to extract their essence and strength. The paintings evoke the appearance of scientific experiments, organic images that suggest the existence of a living, self-sufficient universe in each canvas. It's the research and study of color, of the emotions it arouses, of what is visible and invisible, as seen through a microscope. Félix mainly uses colored acrylic juices, using only the primary colors. These are added and mixed directly onto the canvas, which he often applies and sprays with a variety of tools, as the painter has banned the use of brushes. The tools he hijacks or makes, as well as his use of canvas as an object, serve to highlight the materiality of painting, its mystical power and question the process of the work. The artist rejects representative, figurative painting, preferring abstraction, which is "opposed to the representation of the visible appearances of the external world". In this sense, painting should work the eye, not direct it. Shapes are abstract, minimal or non-existent. Color expresses itself; it is both matter and the translator of light, the vector of affect. Color has the ability to reach the depths of the psyche, to touch the absolute... the unspeakable.

Trakif
09.06.2017 — 13.07.2017
Whether prints or projections... the members of the Trakif graphic and multimedia development studio like to understand, define and reveal. Stirred by exchange and participation, their devices are distinguished by their inciting, playful and immersive character. The "in-house" design of visual systems and digital instruments leads the people of Lyon towards objects that are far from expected, and the situations are never repeated, as their processes meet with each intervention and renew plasticity. "Since 1997, graphic design and programming have been at the heart of our projects, and this association is the founding basis of Trafic. Right from the start, we felt that data processing could be used for creative purposes, even though digital languages were essentially designed to make tools. When we write a program, we're faced with technical questions that we have to answer: how to solve the code to ensure that the program works properly. But when we study the aesthetic results generated, when we make our own visual choices, we realize every time that we are part of an artistic approach." T rakif Ephemeral, temporary, transitory, interventions like creative processes are always on the lookout for new spaces. Recontextualized, reincarnated or simply conceived for the occasion, these devices meet at the Passages contemporary art center with a new setting conducive to their reawakening. Protean structures: luminous, mechanical, printed, these characters explore and question the porosity of "specialities".

Le Tour de France 1969 d'Eddy Merckx
Jef Geys
03.02.2017 — 24.03.2017
Jef Geys is a confirmed Belgian artist. In 2009, he represented his country at the Venice Biennale. Since the 1950s, his work has been an ongoing exchange between the personal and the universal. He meticulously keeps an inventory, from which he draws, to create new narratives around three fundamental axes: his environment, his private life and his relationship with the outside world. Since birth, his life has been in Kempens: the name of the region that is also, by extension, Kempens. Informatieblad, the name of the newspaper in which Jeff Gens began working and which he has adopted as the artistic medium for his research. Jeff Gens likes to multiply his experiences: working with neighborhood committees, taking part in strikes, leading a political party and mixing the notions of minor and major art... experiences that aim to propose forms of transmission, or even apprenticeship. Eddy Merckx's Tour de France 1969 is an exhibition of 67 black-and-white photographs taken by Belgian artist Jeff Gens. In 1969, he decided to follow the Tour de France. A cycling enthusiast like many of his compatriots, the Belgian artist photographed the event of Eddy Merckx's first victory. The images treat the riders equally with fans and onlookers. The advertisements are the symbolic literature of the event. The points of view are those of the true amateur, the one who, in a repetitive and rarely satisfied gesture, without any aesthetic project, embodies the purest critical position. Exhibited almost fifty years after their creation, the photographs could be marked by a documentary or nostalgic value, but that's without taking into account the sharpness of Jef Geys's work, which decides to emit a distance and accompany the frames with visible "bolted" fixings. This is followed by a montage of two pages from Belgian newspapers, dated July 22, 1969, in which the winner of the Great Loop of the Year and the first step on the moon are announced on an equal footing.

Aniline Black
Élodie Lesourd
07.10.2016 — 09.12.2016
The exhibition Aniline Black, conceived specifically for the Centre d'art contemporain Passages by Élodie Lesourd, is both an exploration of the different facets of her work and an invitation to trace the genealogy of the site and the painting itself. Taking as its starting point the history of the building and its links to the hosiery industry, and more specifically to the preparation of black inverdissable dye, the project unfolds a whole chromatic reflection around the desire to fix the ephemeral. By activating this dangerous and harmful black, whether in the smooth, cold glaze of a lacquer, dyed in leather, or as a powdery dispersion, color is approached through mystery and abstraction. Then the shimmer of color is revealed by the presence of hyperrkalist paints, vestiges and fixations of a vanished past. Painted or raw pigment, whose vivid hues attract and reassure, can prove just as deceptive and dangerous. Between lyricism, vital disorder and perennial appearance, the pieces on view throughout the exhibition are all modes of investigation into the essence of things. If music, whose presence here is silent and unobtrusive, is the primary chord, the whole project invites us to listen inwardly and colorfully.

Jagna Ciuchta
05.02.2016 — 25.03.2016
Jagna Cicuta was born in 1977 in NOWY DWOR MAZOWIECKI, Poland. Now living and working in Paris, she is developing a protean and processual practice, linked to the very status of the exhibition. She deals both with the forms used to represent works of art - such as displays and documentation - and with the question of authority inherent in an exhibition produced in a given context. Invited by the Frac Champagne-Ardenne to present an exhibition at the Centre d'art contemporain Passages, Jagna Ciuchta's Silver Cover is an original project based on the Frac's collection, and more specifically on a 1974 work by Polish artist Roman Cieslewicz entitled Femme Fatale. Although this silkscreen print is not physically present in the exhibition, it is its main articulation, the work from which the entire project deployed within the walls of the art center has developed. Rather than borrowing works from the Frac Champagne-Ardenne collection, Jagna has chosen to invite four artists - Eva Barto, Éléonore Chêneau, Céline Vaché-Olivieri, France Valliccioni - who are not represented there, but whose issues resonate with the Frac collection. She then designed a specific "display" for these potential works from the collection, highlighting them while taking pleasure in appropriating and manipulating them. Between a desire to share, to work together and a certain form of "vampirism", Jagna CIuchta deploys an ambivalent, yet humorous staging that pokes fun at classic forms of art presentation (the pedestal, the cyma, the territory of the work, the documentation photograph) and offers a new point of view on the works successfully presented here.

Sophie Hasslauer
Sophie Hasslauer
02.10.2015 — 04.12.2015
"You have to see it to believe it". Well no, with Sophie Hasslauer, you have to look at it to know that you shouldn't believe it... well no, you have to look at it to know that you shouldn't believe it, but in fact you have to believe it. Limits are a matter of education, we know. And in art too. Doesn't reality appear when there's nothing left to see? Isn't this what Sophie Hasslauer's practice is all about? So why does she give so much to see? It's a pretext! Yes, a smokescreen, a deception, a form, a color, a thickness, a weight, a reality in place, but one that speaks only of that which cannot be palpated, gives thickness to the air, shows the invisible, tells things, criticizes, grumbles or sleeps. Sophie Hasslauer is a painter. She shows objects, but what really interests her is painting, another oddity. "No", she says, "it's not odd, it's in the process, I'm looking for what in the elaboration and presentation of the object is painting". Text by Estelle Delorme

20.02.2015 — 17.04.2015
Un passage à bout portant is an exhibition idea put forward by Giuseppe Gabelle and Guillaume Leblon, teachers at Ésad de Reims. It involves a dozen students from the art section of the École supérieure d'art et de design, chosen for the quality of their work, whose principle is to create the conditions for their projection into a professional environment, such as that of the Centre d'art contemporain Passages.

"Mehryl Ferri Levisse is not a photographer, but photography plays an important role in his artistic work. This technique, which he calls "captationphotographique", enables him to offer almost documentary traces of events in time, in the intimacy of his studio. A space he calls the theater of all his thoughts and fantasies, in which he constructs, on a scale of 1, contexts in which he stages the body. Closed, doorless and windowless are the images of his dreams, in which it is impossible to hold on to a material reality. His large-format photographic recordings create a direct frontal relationship between the body presented and the body of the viewer. By choosing to display these prints in the space of the Centre d'Art Contemporain /Passages in a horizontal arrangement, rather than opting for a conventional hanging, he proposes to create a stronger intimacy between the viewer and the viewed. You are cordially invited to move around, look at and apprehend the visual proposition, whose links and layout are not lost on the distracted eye."

La filière imaginaire
Matali Crasset
15.02.2013 — 12.04.2013
Magali Crasset trained as an industrial designer. In the image of one of her emblematic objects, the hospitality column "Quand Jim monte à Paris", she has developed her own methodology in which she questions the obviousness of the codes that govern our daily lives, the better to free herself from them and experiment. Magali Grasset's exhibition at Passages, entitled "La filière imaginaire" (The imaginary chain), is unique in that it is made mainly of cardboard angle irons, developing a fiction that is at once creative, economic and semi-industrial. The installation is in turn a place where matter grows, a space to rest in, a workshop, a factory, a research space, a laboratory, a production site, and integrates the research carried out during the Workshop with more than fifteen students from the École supérieure de design de Troyes.

"Do we know exactly what inspires us? Inspiration is, in a way, a non-discernible artistic urge, given its mysterious origin. Whereas a pregnant woman's urge, despite its equally mysterious origin, will never merit the term inspiration. In short, I think this particular house, built in 1862 for a hosiery industrialist, inspired me. This house, even when refurbished as a contemporary art center and thus neutralized in its "animism", suggested this exhibition to me. A fireplace, wood panelling or a picturesque, typical or stylish terrazzo floor are preserved here, as you wish and according to your own taste. No doubt these beautiful traces of an era on the verge of being beautiful have sent me back to my own, and I've been thinking about equally stylish sculptures from 1995 to 2003, which I'm delighted to see installed on the mantelpiece or in the conservatory. But, as decorating consultants say, the old goes with the contemporary and, as sentimentalists say, the present is often contained in the past. So, on the other hand, I made a wall, a huge, ravaged, flamboyant relief, a scab, the kind that sizzles under laziness." Anita Molinero

 Space Oddity
Morgane Tschiember
27.01.2012 — 16.03.2012
For Morgane Tschiemer, the exhibition is an opportunity to bring her own pieces back into play, to reconstruct and reinterpret them. The Space Oddity exhibition is conceived as a context of revelation. Space Oddity extends the research begun with Folded Spaces and Unspecific Spaces. The working protocol is that of a laboratory. The ensemble is envisaged as a specific temporal space, at once a culmination and a beginning, a transition and a metaphor for place, understood as a physical and mental space, where thought circulates and is transmitted.

The proposal for Passages, center d'art contemporain is directly in line with my research into formatting and behavior. These works have led me to develop spaces, sculptures, scores or, as today, environments based on the idea of sound. "phonons and photons beam" illustrates the wave-corpuscle duality of sound and light. Phonon (from the ancient Greek phonê, voice) designates a quantum of vibrational energy, a quality in common with the photon, which is a "packet" of elementary energy, endowed with nodular behavior, and simultaneously having corpuscular properties.

Veit Stratmann
10.06.2011 — 29.07.2011
Veit Stratmann's approach revolves around a reflection on space and its use. His works are generally closely linked to the places where the artist is invited to intervene. Their dimensions, the neutrality of their shapes and colors, the materials used and their positioning generate "devices" that can sometimes resemble unlikely street furniture, engaging his culture of space. Veit Stratmann's work is constantly accompanied by drawing as a tool of projection, control and distance.

"There's a strange, nagging pleasure in coming face to face with a work of art, a curious exhilaration in entering a space like going on a first date, full of longing and apprehension. Fear that everything will go wrong. Hoping it will sweep you off your feet. Entering an exhibition by Sarah Fauguet and David Cousinard instantly soothes our aesthetic fears, before immersing us in the magma of a world closing in behind us. The encounter is like diving into thick, murky water. And everything goes wrong, and we're swept away. Their generous work doesn't inhabit the space, it turns it upside down, skins it, prevents it, counters the permanence of the place to replay it in its entirety. It asserts a presence that shakes our certainties about what we expect from art. Clearly, all this is not a charming rendezvous, it's a head-on collision that leaves its mark on the mind."

Natures mortes
Véronique Ellena & Alexandre Joly
17.09.2010 — 29.07.2010
Natures mortes is an original series of events based on a unifying theme, designed to bring together contemporary works with the collections of the Musée des Beaux-arts and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Troye. After series of portraits, both individual and collective (Cyclists, Those with Faith...), Véronique Ellena turned to landscapes and still lifes in 2006. Her work, produced with the patient technique of the darkroom, begs the question of its relationship with painting and the still-life tradition. What does it mean to depict still lifes today? The proposed events explore the relationship between the arts and between eras. The idea is to showcase works from the museums of Troyes, which do not retrace the full diversity of the still-life genre, but which do offer similarities with photographic compositions. Véronique Ellena explains that "the fundamental idea of the series is to seek out that place, that moment of transition, for the space of an instant, between life and death. It's also about showing a mysterious, sad and cruel beauty head-on. The trace of the passage of time is also the subject of Alexandre Joly's sculptures. Taxidermy attempts to preserve the appearance of the bird's life, while its flight, naturally invisible, is materialized here by absorbent cotton. The traces both underline the animal's movement and denounce its illusion. Elsewhere, sounds and feathers deployed as shields (Le Repos du guerrier) track the presence/absence of animal life.

Dominique de Beir
26.11.2008 — 16.01.2009
"When Dominique De Beir pierces her cardboard boxes, she doesn't totally ruin the notion of painting, but rather puts them in crisis. Indeed, what is a painting where there is nothing to see, where the gaze falls into sock traps? What a thing is," writes Aristotle, "is always determined by its function: for a thing is truly itself when it can perform its function, an eye, for example, when it can see; on the contrary, the thing incapable of performing its function exists only by homonymy, for example a dead eye or an eye of stone, just as a saw of wood is no more a saw in painting. "These are not mere surfaces, like a painting, a fresco, a sheet of paper or a wooden panel; they are surfaces that criticize themselves as such, i.e. that are based on their own crisis. Indeed, they call for touch as much as life, to caress these holes which are often, at the same time, protuberances. As Dominique de Beir reads Braille, the tactile dimension of her works takes on a particular relief. It's the whole body that takes over: the impotent eye gives way to the hand."

Our actions are not guided by words, but by urgency and a constantly renewed attention to context. For the first CLARA exhibition, we present Sans préméditions. This installation is the result of a series of collective actions carried out from May 12 to 20 in the art center. The materials, provided in part by patrons and partner companies, were also found on site, during the installation of the exhibition. The installation takes into account the entirety of the art center's spaces."

23.05.2007 — 25.07.2007
Christopher Varady-Szabo is a Canadian artist living in Gaspésie, Québec. Exploring concepts of inhabitation and architectural systems, he creates ephemeral installations that aim to reveal the relationship between being and environment. His sculptures are inspired by primitive structures, and to design them, he borrows and adapts authentic traditional construction methods. This new body of work finds its meaning through links between forms produced by these traditional primitive construction techniques and objects from domestic life. In a context revealing a parasitic and territorial cohabitation, the resulting fusions and inlays will give rise to a body of hybrid works and installations, taking on the appearance of a fabulous new living species...

Bad dreams
Rémy Marlot
22.11.2006 — 02.02.2007
For the Passages contemporary art center in Troyes, Rémy Marot is showing 2 series of photographs and a selection of videos, most of which have never been shown before. The center's first room is devoted to a series of photographs taken in 2002 on the outskirts of major Swiss cities. Parking lots, gas stations and a hotel at the end of a road, photographed in a cinematic format, offer themselves to the eye in the emptiness and strange atmosphere conferred by the lighting and solitude of the night. The second part of the exhibition is devoted to the work of Rémy Marot. 8 videos, produced between 2003 and 2006, focus on one of the dominant themes in his work: Night and its disquieting universe. The video artist conceives his works as fictions, without it being possible to identify a very clear narrative or an obvious reading. He deliberately gives only a few clues, without ever revealing the logic of the scenario, which is more akin to that of dreams, through its absences, its shifts, the disparity of its elements and its incompleteness. He readily uses the subjective camera point of view to film deserted streets, parking lots, hotels or cellars, thus involving the viewer emotionally, leaving him to plunge into a mirror where he can identify with and imagine the script's unwritten scenes. In this way, he draws us into a disturbing, dreamlike universe, where the beauty of ordinary scenery meets violence and death.

On what pleases and delights me? See below, and so on... About my obsessions? Let's keep it modest, I don't spread my life around, I'm not sure anyone would be interested. About the paintings I present at "voeux d'artistes"? They're too recent, so let's let the poetry of things misunderstood live on, Let the dark sky fill with stars, And our brains sailing in the pink clouds of the irrational. RUDOLF: you stick a needle in a piece of tapestry, a white thread in the cat's eye, and voila, it's all there. The needle, and voilà, you have a painting. But what does it really mean? is it ridiculous? BERTA: Well, you see, you're the one who says it best! Ridiculous is a very interesting subject, but it doesn't interest me. What else do you want to know? "The 8 paintings for sale are all almost square, i.e. 23.9 x 24.8 centimetres. The piece at 75 euros" "

"Nowadays, the expansion of "in situ" international exhibition practices and art market exchanges tend to turn artists into eternal travelers, like the great painter-decorators of past centuries who went from court to court and castle to castle... The works I produce are therefore at once subject to the demands of a place - both geographical and historical. But at the same time, they are so independent of this place, that they display the way in which they will be moved for the next presentation..." - PATRICK RAYNAUD (in P. Raynaud, Sculpture, éd J. Damase 1989)

Gina Pane
Gina Pane
29.09.1990 — 02.12.1990
The desire of a number of partners to present a major exhibition devoted to Gina Pane stems from the same concern for a privileged apprehension of a work whose actions have not ceased to nourish contemporary art since the end of the sixties. At that time, Gina Pane's research was rooted in body art. For this major event, we do not wish to use the overly monolithic term "retrospective", but rather to evoke an articulation between two positions: Re/reading the installations from the late sixties, situating the period of the actions through historical documentation (writings, photographs, correspondence), re/presenting the graphic works that materialized the conception and realization of the actions opposite other current graphic works proceeding from the same approach. Reading of works dated between 1986 and 1990, including the installation "La prière des pauvres et le corps des Saints" ("The Prayer of the Poor and the Body of the Saints") created specifically for the Sundial (Chapelle de l'Hôtel-Dieu) in Troyes.

Joaquim Facló draws objects using a plastic box with holes in it, through the bottom of which paint flows. His works produce a surprising sensation: the objects they represent seem as strongly present as if they themselves were springing up before our eyes for the first time. This effect is particularly intense when falcó depicts animals that we barely see in nature, whether they are fleeing or scaring us away.

La notte
Aki Kuroda
24.06.1989 — 03.09.1989
In the works of the series entitled La Notte, Aki Kuroda has painted clues that we usually associate with the immensity of night. He has thus composed spaces in which illusions of depth, contradictory or elusive, give the vertiginous sensation of facing vast expanses, with no apparent limits. To create these spatial impressions, Aki Kuroda articulates signs that our memory associates with the idea of limitless expanse. By playing on the automatism of our deductions, he guides our perceptions. In the impossibility of ordering elements located in the same space, we experience the illusion of infinity. Sometimes, novel arrangements of depth cues multiply the dizzying sensations associated with them. They generate unfamiliar spatial impressions that powerfully overwhelm the flat surface of the canvas.

Raymond Hains
17.10.1987 — 25.11.1987
1987 was the year of the Capetian millennium, the 10th anniversary of the Centre Pompidou and the centenary of Marcel Duchamp's birth, all places and people that inspired the artist. 1987 was also the year of Raymond Hains' first exhibition at the Centre d'art contemporain / Passages. The culmination of his Trojan excursions and research into the Trojan Horse or Troyes. His research: readings, meetings, discussions, discoveries, coincidences, so many ricochets from Troy to Troyes. The result is the Rue Veille-Rome exhibition, which put an end to his career as a poster designer and turned him into what might be called an archaeologist of the obvious. From his travels in Troyes, we are left with a mental journey into the intimacy of the artist, but also into the intimacy of the city. 32 years after Raymond Hains' first exhibition in Troyes, the Centre d'art contemporain / Passages is once again honoring him with the Passages / nocturne event and its sequel. In this exhibition, his works will not stand alone, but will be accompanied by those of Joël Ducorroy, who pays tribute to his friend by drawing inspiration from him. A joint exhibition with FRAC Champagne-Ardenne.

Masafumi Maita
09.02.1985 — 07.03.1985
Masafumi Maita seeks to produce an image of water that is close to our perception of it. The three series of photographs surrounding the central piece reveal the limits of photographic representation of water. At rest, water is only visible as a reflection on its surface. In the first photo of the "Ronds dans l'eau sur reflets de feuillages" series, the water is barely perceptible: all we can see is the foliage reflecting off it (allowing us to deflect it). Masafumi Maita's work is designed to reactivate our multiple perceptions of moving water. It is closer to our experience of this liquid than photography (an image that merely reflects its surface). 12.01.1985 — 06.02.1985
January-February 1985 There are three subsets in this exhibition: photographs from 1978-1979; more recent mixed-media works (drawings and collages); and an on-site video. All these works testify to a sense of secrecy and strangeness that places them in the tradition of Italian metaphysical painters, but without the surrealist bric-a-brac.

when the weather's fine, in other words, when when it's absolutely daytime, when in the sky you can see far when you can't see anything, when you can see everything on earth, when the sun turns emptiness blue and fullness white, perfectly, when it slices right through without burrs, when it dissolves the depth that anguishes, to paint the world in purely decorative highlights. i no longer have any doubts... because I have no more desires.
